From a curious kid nicknamed MacGyver to a first-year championship BBQ team. Here’s how O’Neals Kitchen found its fire.
HOW IT ALL BEGAN

Long before O’Neals Kitchen became an award-winning BBQ team, Brandon O’Neal was known for taking things apart, figuring out how they worked, and finding creative ways to make them better.
It earned him a nickname that stuck: MacGyver.
As Brandon grew older, that same curiosity and creativity found a new home in the kitchen. He began experimenting with flavors, perfecting recipes, and finding new ways to turn good food into something unforgettable.
But for Brandon, cooking has always been about more than what’s on the plate. It’s about helping people, sharing a few laughs, and bringing friends and family together.
After more than 25 years in the corporate world, Brandon began looking for an opportunity to pursue something that had always brought him joy. When the chance came to turn his passion for cooking into a business, he decided to take that leap.
And O’Neals Kitchen was born.
FROM LOCAL EVENTS TO THE WORLD STAGE
AN INCREDIBLE
FIRST YEAR.
O’Neals Kitchen entered its first BBQ competitions in 2026. At Hard Truth Bourbon & BBQ, the team earned Grand Champion and People’s Choice honors. The People’s Choice win brought a Golden Ticket to the World Food Championships.
Competing alongside established teams in Indianapolis, O’Neals Kitchen earned second place in People’s Choice at the 2026 World Food Championships.
For a new team, that experience was more than an award. It proved that curiosity, hard work, and great people can create something special.

Brandon has never done it alone. His wife, Shawna, and his stepdaughters help whenever they can. But one person who has been especially instrumental in the journey is his longtime friend, JD.
More than just his go-to grilling expert and competition partner, JD challenges Brandon to keep improving, pushes him to reach higher, and believes in what they’re building together. Whether they’re experimenting with new flavors, preparing for competition, or tackling the next big opportunity, their friendship and shared determination have helped turn a passion for cooking into an award-winning team.
Together, Brandon and JD have grown, embraced bigger challenges, and built something that goes well beyond barbecue.
Ask what O’Neals Kitchen is known for and two favorites come up fast: Peach Bourbon Glazed Pork Belly Lollipops and smoky Burnt Ends. But their favorite part is still seeing people enjoy the food.
